A 1998, $16.8 million HOPE VI Grant funded the demolition of "The Bucket" [267 deplorable housing units] and the creation of "The New Village of Eastlake". The site features 160, two story townhouses including 70 public housing/tax-credit rental units and 90 homeowner properties. This award winning community is Delaware's only completed HOPE VI project. The Village of Eastlake was awarded the prestigious Readers Choice Award from Affordable Housing Finance Magazine as the "Best Affordable Homeownership Opportunity in the United States for 2006–2007".
